Is it better to use an ordinary shared plan with blog features-inclusive or blog hosting (optimized for that)?
I bare in mind Downtownhost.com and ServerPoint.com.
Both companies seem good for me but I'm not sure which one is better to choose.

Guess your choice is really very difficult 'cause both companies (ServerPoint.com and Downtownhost.com) have nice reputations in the web hosting market. Long history and high-level support make their services appealing to many web masters web hosting-oriented.

I think what you need for stable blog hosting is a basic shared hosting plan, Word Press or Blogger can be installed for free, so basically all you need is stability and good support, you may consider simplehelix.com or globaltap.com shared plans for this.

There is no point to look for specialized hosting for a blog. I think you may use any shared hosting plan which supports php and mysql - it is provided by almost any hosting company.

The more so because Reliable companies mostly do not have blog hosting, as a separate service.

I believe there is no particular need to look for blog hosting, because almost any shared hosting plan allows you (has everything necessary) to host a blog.
