Optimal keyword density percentage

What is optimal keyword density for SEO purposes? Some say around 1- 7 % generally. What is your experience? I usually target for around 3-4 %.

I try to keep it 4%...but the key is to use the same words in different ways(synonyms, as part of a phrase and so on..)
Don't forget that on page optimization is good but not as important as the inbound links..

but how about if did not use synonyms...you just use the same word over and over again will that be of no difference? just wanna know

i still maintain 1-4% percent.. so far so good...
