From my experience, important things in SEO are how good and unique your website content and how much external links pointing to your website.

META tags is nice to do, but don't lose a lot time on it.

META tags have lost importance since their glory days ten years ago. They have lost importance to external links, but they are not to be disregarded.

Is it just a coincidence that Google presents the description tag on it's SERPs,(and sometimes preffer to use different more relevant paragraph from the site page...)?
well, i believe Meta Tags are still important..and if not, then we still have nothing to lose
