Do the Alexa ratings have any affect on rankings in any of the search engines?

No, Alexa just measures the traffic of your site. But Alexa is not that accurate enough because some sites have higher traffic but low in Alexa rating.

No, they don't. As parusa608 put it, Alexa's ratings are based on the traffic that your site receives based on THEIR (Alexa's) computations or tracking. And I also agree that it is not quite accurate. I think they even consider traffic brought by the site owner, which in my opinion, they don't have a way of identifying or excluding.

No, but Alexa ratings can be used for determining the prices of advertising, Text Link Ads, ReviewMe, etc. Work on SEO before your Alexa ratings.

No, alexa ratings are completely dependant on how many users visit your site with the alexa toolbar. The traffic ranking is very undependable because you will push your rating way up if you use it yourself.

The alexa rating wouldn't affect your position in search engines... But it would affect other things such as selling links with Text-Link-Ads. They base their pricing off of your alexa rank.

Thats true, but TLA does not use only the Alexa rank, there is PR and other stuff that they use.
But as I see Alexa, its not really worth to try anything to get it up, It will happen if th site is ok. My general idea about SEO is make it good for google and all other will folow, and they do, so just dont worry

TLA has to rethink how they value a website since PR is now less valuable for measuring how good a website.

Alexa is horrible and I am suprised how many webmasters still use it.

Alexa rankings aren't related to search engine rankings , but I sure think that Alexa rankings and statistics gives you a much better idea and detailed analysis than any search engine or pagerank can. Analysing the search engineranking position ( SERP) for individual keywords can only tell you where you are for that keyword , but that can change pretty soon , especially if you are in a competitive niche for example ' make money'. However, google analytics seems to have good statistics that helps you analyse the traffic you receive.

Well you've already gotten some good answers. I would add that lots of people also use Alexa as a measure of traffic when trying to sell their websites.

I'm not sure why because it isn't that accurate, but I guess it's something that people can point to which everyone has access to view, unlike most webstats.

I agree with that , Donna. There are several sites that act as platforms for article writers and marketers . The article writers have a public profile leading to their website or blog and a feedback box from previous clients. The public profile includes the alexa traffic and Google PR of their site . Although , the information might not be accurate , this acts as a measure of their web presence and is regarded as a cyber asset for their website as it can be encashed .

Well said... a cyber asset. And alexa is at least a kind of metric that can be used to measure a site's popularity and compare one site against another.

Alexa is skewed in favor of websites that has something to do with web development since most people who install the Alexa toolbar are web savvy. It's a nice tool for comparison but should not be taken as is as a measure of a site's overall popularity.

However, I would like to add that a lot of advertisers rely heavily on Alexa and for that matter alone it has an important place in the site ranking scheme of things.
