Does placing links to related sites improve rankings?

As google says that their motive is to provide better information to people, I think they give weightage to links to related sites as well.

For example many pages in wikipedia have links to .gov or .edu sites like say 20 links per page. This is because wikipedia tries to provide more info to people. And the pages rank well.

Has this something to do with the .edu or .gov links on the pages? I know that wikipedia has many back links but I still wonder if the .edu or .gov links have something to do with it.

Please give your suggestions and correct me if I am wrong.

Link backs from related pages are really very important. Links from irrelevant page won't effect PRs, but that our pages wont show up for relevant keywords

The questions actually aims for:
Can I improve my PR (or site performance on search engines concerning specific keywords) by placing links on my site to certain other pages.

I do not think, that it will help you, if you link to google or wikipedia. Even a spam or **** page could link to these sites...

The question is yes, you can definently boost your PR by putting your links to certain sites. What I recommend are Reciprocal Links. You can find more information on Recipricoal links on google.

This happens because otherwise everyone would do it and get higher PR. Google, wikipedia, yahoo and all the major search engines have methods of stopping this happening.

Well you can setup some Recipricoal links for your blogs and websites to improve your PageRank. Most easy way is that use blogs to get high PR backlinks but always make a good post otherwise webmaster can use "No follow" tage which makes your backlinks useless.

... But they will use kind of an algorythm showing a pattern. It won't help a gambling site to place links to a biology sites since the content diverts to much. Personally one should only make use of this to add well structured content with relevant references to that site.

Of course, quality links are also a factor to improve sites' ranking in search engines. It may also improve site's traffic and backlinks.

Better to think in terms of your visitors and not Google bot. Relevant links at the end of any content must be helpful for visitors and Google Bot may favor you if otherwise fit.

I agree with deep_3657. Link backs from related or similar sites as yours are usually interpreted that your site contains enough relevant information about a specific topic or point of interest, that others cite you as reference.

PR of a site can be increased by irrelevant links also, but in rankings the site will suffer. Having high PR is good but high PR doesn't contribute to the rankings in SE's.

Both giving and recieving related links will be good for search engine optimization. Just be careful not to put too many links on one page, because your website may be considered a link farm and be punished or even banned from the search engines.

Links back from related sites not only improve rankings but also bring traffic. They are much better than random links from random sites. They should be the first priority for a webmaster promoting his/her site.

As far as the topic is concerned then yes, creating links with related sites will do you good they will increase pr if you get the right amount of links. Google detect if your site is relevant to the other site.
