Apart from the more popular ones, these sites have helped me out a lot in learning PHP on my own: PHP Tools, Site Point, and GID.

The tutorials are laid out in a very simple manner so that beginners are not threatened. I already have them bookmarked. Hope you can make use of them, too. Good luck!
