True, and what makes the websites appear a lot on these search engines is content, I mentioned that on another post, so PR is not that important anymore

This has got me thinking, I wonder if Google is lowering the importance of PageRank with a view to discontinuing altogether. So many people are obsessed with PageRank, and they tend to do things to raise their PR that they otherwise wouldn't do. Things like buying links, and spamming blogs and forums. I think it was a good idea initially (on Google's part), but I wonder if it's such a good indicator of an authority or quality site still?

While the actual term Page Rank as well as the PR in your toolbar applies only to Google. Both MSN and Yahoo have their own versions of it. They just don't make it publicly visible.

Best not to get too caught up on Google's version. What you seen in the tool bar is a minimum of 1 month old and as much 6 months old.

I asked everyone how does Google rank pages and I got so many answers that I still don't know how it's done. Some say that content is the most important thing, others say it depends on the links that point to high PR sites. Where's the truth? Can anyone enlighten me?

I do agree that page rank is only for google since it is now considered as most used search engine . Thats why page rank is indeed important for them to read our blog.

One reason you are getting so many different answers is that no one actually knows for sure how Google calculates page rank. There may be someone, under a strict non-disclosure contract, who knows the whole formula, but I think it's more likely that no one person working for Google knows what the exact formula is.

So everybody is just guessing. Some are making better, more informed guesses than others by running their own experiments. It's possible that both backlinks and content play a role.

Keep in mind that if you are looking to rank high in the SERPs, it's not just page rank that determines your search ranking for a keyword. I've seen sites with higher ranking in the search results pages outrank sites with much higher page rank. If you're talking search results ranking keywords and associated keywords (LSI) play a part.

I hope that helps to clear up some of your confusion.

Actually PR updates each time Google updates their data centers - it is only the green bar that shows on the Google Toolbar that is updated usually every 3 months.
