Microsoft ups Hotmail storage to 5 GB

Microsoft Corp. will soon let users of its Hotmail service store 5 gigabytes of photos and other e-mail messages, more than double the previous limit.

They are just trying to out-do GMail. They don't need to though, They have 60% of the free email market anyways.

Honestly, who really needs 5GB for e-mail. If they upped the maximum file size -- now that would be something. No one has 5GB worth of text stored in their e-mail, at least not anyone I know.

Yea, only those that receive a bunch of spam in their inbox everyday... :-)

But compared to AOL and Yahoo Hotmail is far behind because they offer virtually unlimited.

I'd like to agree with Archbob. Who needs 5 gigs of space when the max file size won't support it anyway? But then, if storage space is what you want, storage space is what you get with GMail. And I like it much better than any free email around.

Well either way most people are going to think lets go with the provider with unlimited storage just in case I do get that much.

Not knowing how much 5 gigs actually is I know I wouldn't use it as I don't use that even in my unlimited AOL account but, still it's nice to have it.

Actually, I use Hotmail to host my files, I have 1500 megabytes worth of raster and vector images, several heavily-compressed graphics programs and countless MP3s I can extract in an emergency. Not to mention a huge amount of paint.net plugins, the AK project source code and...

Alright, I need a life.

Actually, 5GB is too big indeed for personal use.
