I'll suggest that you try out Blogger (yourname.blogspot.com). It pretty much gives you a free hand on whatever you wish to do with your blog/site. It's so flexible, you can put ads and what have you. Plus the layout is easily customizable. A little HTML knowledge will go a long way.

Blogger is nice to start out with blogging, but your best option if you really don't want to spend a lot of money is to buy an .info domain and get free hosting and set up a blog on there.

I've used Squidoo more, so I'll talk about that, but hubpages is similar. The have adsense built in, you don't have to do anything to set it up. They split all the revenue they make from your pages with you. But they have lots of other ways you can make money too, and it is all incredibly simple to set up. You can can sell Amazon books, various items from other web stores. Even airline tickets and accommodation bookings if you are into the travel niche. Everything that sells through your pages you get a commission on.

I agree on that. Actually, all of my blogs are blogspot platform and It's easy for me to add some ads on my blogs.
