What is the advantage, if any of purchasing a domain name form Network Solutions vs. the cheaper ones?

There is none. I use register.com and never had a problem. Some of the real cheap ones might be hard to get things done quickly and get customer service with.

for a domain, i don't think it really matters who you register with.
but for hosting, you do need a good host to make sure your site stays online.

Network Solutions really has no advantages other than their name. Most of them will try to sell you additional services, which is fine if you are new to this, but sucks if you are in the industry. Watch for contractual agreements from the cheaper ones.
