| I think Google's GTalk is the best, and that's where I have most of my friends. But if you are trying to decide it really depends on what service your friends and other contacts use. When I was on PC I used Trillian too because it just made everything simpler.
I guess if you are just starting out and want to get into Instant Messaging then you'd want to go for the one that you like best as far as features and ease of use. Then maybe some of these posts would help you decide as a few people have said what they like about the particular IM client they use.
