I think there is more to it than leisure. There is definitely more to it within the English major as students are expected not only to study literature itself but to study it within certain paradigms (critical theory, reader response, psychoanalytical, marxist, etc.) and to look carefully for certain themes, social implications, etc. There is certainly a leisure aspect to literature but there is also a methological one that can make it seem like a science.
